Last week, ResponsibleGlass held its first-ever Stakeholder Council, bringing together Members, Supporters and Observers from more than 25 organisations across the glass value chain and civil society. It marked an important milestone for the initiative – not because it delivered final answers, but because it created space for open, informed discussion at a critical early stage.
Why the Stakeholder Council Matters
The purpose of the Stakeholder Council is simple but vital: to ensure ResponsibleGlass is grounded in real-world expertise, reflects the diversity and complexity of the sector, and is shaped collaboratively rather than in isolation.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who took part for the quality of contributions, constructive challenge and positive energy brought to the discussion. The session was marked by a high level of engagement, thoughtful challenge and a shared determination to create an ambitious standard.
What We Heard: Key Themes From the Discussion
While the session was wide-ranging, several consistent themes emerged.
1. Ambition, with credibility
There was strong support for an ambitious vision for ResponsibleGlass, alongside a clear recognition that ambition must be matched with clear definitions, robust governance and credible pathways to implementation.
2. Tightening and strengthening the framework
Participants actively engaged in refining language, clarifying scope and strengthening concepts, with a shared focus on ensuring the framework is both aspirational and workable in real-world settings.
3. Continuous improvement, not static thresholds
The discussion highlighted the importance of recognising progress over time – supporting learning, improvement and sector-wide transformation.
4. Transparency, alignment and practicality
There was strong interest in how ResponsibleGlass can align with existing standards and regulation, avoid duplication, and ensure auditability, consistency and transparency across the value chain.
What This Means for ResponsibleGlass
The first Stakeholder Council confirmed that ResponsibleGlass is asking the right questions at the right time – and that there is both the appetite and expertise to move forward collaboratively.
An ambitious but structured timeline for 2026 was outlined, with work progressing quarter by quarter. This includes finalising core governance documents, convening focused working groups, developing an initial draft of the standard, and moving into consultation and refinement.
Working Groups Launching Soon
In the coming weeks, working groups will be established to focus on key areas, including:
- Responsible Sourcing of Mined Materials for Glassmaking
- Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions
- Circularity
- Downstream chain of custody and claims
These groups will play a central role in translating the shared vision into a credible, practical and globally relevant standard.
Welcoming New Members and Supporters
Since our last update, we are also pleased to welcome a number of new members and supporters to ResponsibleGlass:
- Equitable Origin
- ARM
- Glass Technology Services

We are grateful to all new members for choosing to engage at this early stage and for contributing their expertise to the process.
Staying Involved
Whether you are a member, supporter or part of the wider ResponsibleGlass community, your engagement and perspective are vital. We encourage you to share reflections, ask questions and continue the dialogue within your organisations and networks.
Thank you once again for the commitment, challenge and collaboration shown at this early stage. Building a global, multi-stakeholder standard for glass is a complex task, but this first Stakeholder Council confirmed that we are asking the right questions and laying the right foundations.
I look forward to the work ahead.
Warm regards,
Francis Sullivan
