Aim: to co-create an independent sustainability standard for glass, for the global glass sector
A new global standard for glass: Glass is everywhere. From the windows in our homes and cars to the screens on our phones and the bottles we drink from, this versatile material is fundamental to modern life. It’s a key component in countless industries, including construction, electronics, renewable energy, transportation, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage packaging. Its unique properties—including transparency and durability make it essential for everything from scientific equipment to fibre optic cables.
We are looking for founders and supporters from the entire glass supply chain, including end users (like those in container glass, flat glass, and automotive), manufacturers, and raw material suppliers, including recyclers. This group will collaborate to design the standard and will officially launch in December 2025.
Despite its importance, the glass industry faces significant challenges. The manufacturing process is energy-intensive, requiring high-temperature furnaces that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. While recycling is a core strength of glass, with many types being infinitely recyclable, global recycling rates and the quality of recycled glass still vary widely. Furthermore, issues around the sourcing of raw materials like silica sand are a growing concern.
While other key materials like timber, steel, and aluminium have established global standards and certification schemes (the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for timber and fibre, ResponsibleSteel and the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI)) the glass industry lacks a single, independent, global framework to address these challenges holistically. This absence makes it more difficult for consumers and businesses to make informed, responsible choices.
The opportunity
We are creating a new international multi-stakeholder solution to this: ResponsibleGlass, dedicated to establishing and promoting a global standard for responsible glass production and sourcing. It will bring together the entire glass value chain, from raw material suppliers to manufacturers, glass users, and recyclers, alongside civil society organisations.
Our goals
Business case
In the current landscape of manufacturing, the business case for deeply embracing sustainable practices is a strategic imperative. For the glassmaking industry, supporting ResponsibleGlass can be a fundamental driver of long-term economic viability and competitive advantage. Supporting ResponsibleGlass can deliver real business value.
A call to action
This is not a task for one organisation or one part of the glass sector alone. True change requires collaboration and a deep and broad understanding of the opportunities and challenges that the sector faces.
We are calling on all organisations in the glass value chain: from sand producers to glass manufacturers to buyers of glass, together with civil society groups, to join us in shaping the future of standards and certification for glass.
